With my right foot playing in childlike fantasies and my left
foot dancing in the adult world, I create whimsical, sculptural
wearables. Experiencing the intensity and wonder of life with
my young child Micah, inspires my creative ideas. I use a broad
range of vibrant colors to portray the playfulness and pleasures
of youth. By exaggerating size and color, I create dramatic movement
and interesting sculptural hand felted wearable accessories. The
accessories consist of organic felt forms that question what defines
wearable. The abstract forms are derived from artistic experimentation
and my fascination with nature, childhood and fantasy.
As an adult, I always want the freedom to have "dress-up" time
and visit imaginary places. My art work is the vehicle I use to
capture this youthful spirit and uninhibited creativity of childhood.
I convey this sense of whimsy in a sophisticated manner for adults.
The hats and neckpieces produce a living quality that explores
wearable possibilities and boundaries.
Felting is one of the most basic and ancient ways of creating
fabric.
This connection to the ancestral past is one of the reasons I
find wool to be so desirable. I have adapted this ancient process
to make contemporary wearable art. The process of felt making
is technical yet lends a playful game-like characteristic. The
motion of rolling and pressing and rolling and pressing the wool
is strenuous but the rhythm is calming. The constant pressure
my hands create on overlapping layers of wool forms a dense object
with dimension, surface design and function. Experiencing the
process of making a three dimensional piece evolve from simple
layers of unspun wool fiber, continues to fascinate and enthuse
me.
